About beholder names

Sprawling results like "Nenthrazerie" and "Chogthuqsahn" stack syllables no humanoid language would produce, with rare stubs such as "Ghehs" reading as a thought cut short. They fit eye tyrants patterned after D&D's beholders, each convinced its own name is the only correct sound in existence. Let your villain berate anyone who mispronounces it.

How beholder names are built

Beholder names build from seven small fragment pools across three templates, the longest repeating its final consonant-vowel pair to stretch the word. "Chornariree" uses the eight-slot doubling template (ch + o + rn + a + r + i + r + ee), as do "Chamoskersi" (ch + a + m + o + sk + e + rs + i) and "Fakakeerso" (f + a + k + a + k + ee + rs + o). The dense interior clusters (rn, sk, rs) give an alien, many-eyed strangeness.

  • Chornariree

    ch (onset) + o (vowel) + rn (medial cluster) + a (vowel) + r (consonant) + i (vowel) + r (repeated consonant slot) + ee (repeated vowel slot)

  • Chamoskersi

    ch (onset) + a (vowel) + m (medial cluster) + o (vowel) + sk (consonant) + e (vowel) + rs (repeated consonant slot) + i (repeated vowel slot)

  • Fakakeerso

    f (onset) + a (vowel) + k (medial cluster) + a (vowel) + k (consonant) + ee (vowel) + rs (repeated consonant slot) + o (repeated vowel slot)

Naming notes

The doubling template is the signature move: by repeating its consonant-vowel pair, it produces long, twisting names that feel non-human, fitting an aberration. The medial cluster pool (gh, rs, sk) front-loads the strangeness. Keep names long for ancient beholders and use the shorter three-slot template for lesser eye-tyrants; the sound family stays consistent across both.

Questions about beholder names

Why are beholder names so long and twisting?
The longest template repeats its consonant-vowel pair, doubling the tail so a name like "Chornariree" winds on. The length suits an ancient aberration.
What creates the alien sound?
The medial cluster pool holds fragments like gh, rs and sk, so the interior of a name (Degharsell, Chamoskersi) feels non-human and many-tongued.
Can I make a weaker eye-tyrant sound lesser?
Use the three-slot template for a shorter, blunter name. It keeps the same harsh sound family while reading as a lesser beholder rather than an elder.
