About staves names

A staff can be humble or holy, and the results cover both: "Rusty Cedarwood Pole" sounds like a hedge wizard's walking stick while "Judgement, Bond of the Burning Sun" belongs on an archmage's back. Material words like jade, cedarwood, and mithril do the descriptive work. Match the material to your caster's wealth and the title to their reputation.

How staves names are built

Staff names draw on seven pools and four templates. A 274-entry standalone bank supplies one-word names. Two modifier shapes pair a 230-entry adjective or owner word with a 12-entry staff-head noun, optionally with a 45-entry material word between. The legendary shape uses a 267-entry title noun, a comma, a 64-entry role noun, and a 245-entry 'of ...' phrase. Worked outputs include Nethermoan (standalone), Undead Scepter (modifier plus head), and Defiled Charredsteel Pole (modifier plus material plus head).

  • Undead Scepter

Undead (modifier) + Scepter (staff head noun)

  • Defiled Charredsteel Pole

Defiled (modifier) + Charredsteel (material) + Pole (staff head noun)

  • Nethermoan

    Nethermoan (standalone name)

Naming notes

The 45-entry material pool, the largest material bank in the set, leans dark and forged (Charredsteel, Gravesteel and similar), which lets a three-part pull read as a grim, worked implement. Head nouns cover mage gear (Scepter, Pole, Spiritstaff), so the class reads as a caster's implement rather than a striking weapon. Standalone coinages skew arcane and mournful (Nethermoan). Use the comma-epithet form for an archmage's named staff; short forms suit apprentice loot. The 'of ...' tails are flavour, not lore.

Questions about staves names

What do the material names look like?
The material pool is the largest in the weapon set at 45 entries and leans dark and forged (Charredsteel, Gravesteel), so the three-part template builds names that read as grim, worked implements.
Are these striking weapons or caster implements?
Mostly caster implements. The 12-entry head pool covers Scepter, Pole, and Spiritstaff, framing the output as a mage's focus rather than a melee club.
What tone do standalone staff names take?
They skew arcane and mournful, like Nethermoan, suiting a named archmage's staff over generic equipment.
