About army names

Sheer scale hits first, as in "The ground trembles as an army of 220,000 strides onwards as a whole", before the outputs narrow to formation lines and banter in the ranks. Hand a sound passage like "the rustling of cloth and the jingling of chainmail" to a scout reporting back, and save the mood pieces for a viewpoint character marching inside the column.

How army names are built

This is not a name generator but a description builder. Five sentence templates each cover one aspect of a marching host, its sheer scale and gait, the wall of sound up close, the morale and mood in the ranks, the order of the columns, and the mix of regiments, and fill each slot from 14 trait banks (troop count, movement style, ambient noise, unit types and more). Roll the templates and the passages compose into one army that reads as a scene, not a label. Real pulls land as "Some fifty thousand strong, the host advances at a walk that nothing has yet halted along the road, its count older than the men marking it so even and unhurried that the country itself seems to flinch." and "Above the column rides the flat thunder of ten thousand boots, threaded through with the rattle of canteens, buckles and slung blades and, beneath it all, the restless cry of hounds straining at their leashes."

  • Some fifty thousand strong, the host advances at a walk that nothing has yet halted along the road, its count older than the men marking it so even and unhurried that the country itself seems to flinch. To stand in its path is to bargain with the weather for better luck.

template: scale and gait + slots: count + pace + steadiness + closing image

the scale line fixes the size and unstoppable pace of the column

  • Not a man among them wastes breath on talk, the silence itself a kind of armour they wear together; whatever quarrel once split these warring lands, they wear the same dust and answer the same horn now.

template: morale in the ranks + slots: mood + shared bond

the morale passage carries the human texture for a viewpoint inside the column

  • Folded into the same march are a dozen lesser regiments: crossbow companies winding their gear as they march, spearmaidens and shield-women fighting beside their kin, spearmaidens and shield-women fighting beside their kin and a long tail of press-ganged townsfolk learning the march as they walk that no single eye can count.

template: composition + slots: regiment frame + four unit types

the roster line lists the unit mix and can repeat a type by chance

Naming notes

Each template answers a different question at the table: how big, how loud, how steady, how it is arrayed, and what fills it out, so you can pull only the line a scene needs. The count slot scales the host from tens of thousands upward, and the mood line leans on discipline, columns that march in a silence worn like armour. Read the scale line aloud when the party first sights the column on the horizon, and save the morale passage for a viewpoint character marching inside it. Treat the unit list as a roster prompt rather than a fixed army sheet.

Questions about army names

Does this generate army names or descriptions?
Descriptions. Each pull returns prose about a host, its scale, sound, morale and unit mix, rather than a banner or regiment name. If you need a name for the army, pair it with a faction or order generator and use these lines for flavour.
How long is a single output?
One to two sentences per template. The scale and morale lines run longest, often a full sentence each, while the formation and roster lines are tighter. Pull several and stack them if you want a paragraph-length set piece.
Can I read these out as a scene in my game?
Yes, that is the intended use. Read the scale line when the party first spots the column, then the sound and morale passages as they close in. The text is written as table narration, so it works aloud with little editing.
