About flag names

Geometry and meaning come paired here, a banner of "two connected circles in grey, light gold, silver and dark orange" or an emblem of "two eyes under a fire". Value lines tie each design to traits like endurance, fortune, or grit, a quick window into the nation that flies it. Match the emblem to a culture's founding story for coherence.

How flag names are built

This builds a flag's design and meaning in words rather than a country name. Three short templates do the work: the field layout and its colours, the emblem itself, and what the emblem stands for. They pull from 9 banks, the largest being a 154-entry emblem-subject pool and a 146-entry emblem-modifier pool, plus 46 layout shapes and a 50-entry values pool. Roll the three lines and you have a banner and its symbolism.

  • This banner is scattered with a loose powdering of stars of teal, moss-green, copper, and cerulean.

line: field + colours + traits: a layout shape plus its colours

the layout line fixes the division and up to four colours

  • Centered on the field rests a coiled serpent, framed by a doorway of carved stone, granted only to those who hold the pass.

line: emblem + traits: an emblem subject, a framing device and a usage clause

the emblem line names the central device, frames it and notes who flies it

  • The emblem speaks of fearless courage, reckless daring, and sacred duty.

line: meaning + traits: three modifier-plus-value draws from the values pool

the meaning line lists three values the device represents

Naming notes

The values line draws three modifier-plus-virtue pairs, so a flag can speak of fearless courage, reckless daring and sacred duty in a single sentence. The emblem line closes on a provenance or usage clause, passed down through nine generations, raised only in the hour of war, which hands you a hook for how a faction treats its banner. Read the three lines together for worldbuilding, or keep just the colour-layout sentence when you only need a quick visual.

Questions about flag names

Does this generate a nation's name or its flag?
Its flag. The output describes the field layout, colours, emblem and what the emblem symbolises, so pair it with a separate country name generator if you need both.
Why does the meaning line repeat three values?
The values sentence draws three times from the 50-entry pool, each value carrying its own modifier, giving a flag a short creed such as fearless courage, reckless daring and sacred duty in one read.
What does the clause after the emblem mean?
The emblem line ends with a provenance or usage note, granted only to those who hold the pass, raised only in the hour of war, telling you when and by whom the banner is flown.
