About tavern names

Common rooms here are heard before they are seen, from "the clinking of beer glasses" behind stained windows to a packed floor where "soldiers seem to be the primary clientele". Read one aloud the moment your party pushes the door open, then improvise the regulars it mentions. A result built around a live band or a busy bar tells you what the place is locally famous for.

How tavern names are built

This describes a tavern rather than naming it. Several sentence templates cover the building's exterior, the windows and the feel from outside, the entrance and welcome, the bartender, the interior structure, and the crowd inside. Slots pull from banks such as 20 exterior-look entries, a 25-entry bank of sounds and smells drifting out, 15 entrance entries and a 15-entry clientele bank, so the building, the staff and the patrons change per roll.

  • The room is full to the rafters. Road-worn traders look to be the regulars here, which tells you the kitchen is worth the wait. The longer tables have been claimed by a guild's worth of craftsmen arguing the finer points of their trade. The smaller ones belong to folk who have settled in as if they own the corner outright. Even the bar stools are taken, though no one minds another body squeezing in.

template: crowd sentence + slots: clientele + what that says + table groups + how they behave

the clientele slot sets who is drinking and seeds a social hook

  • You half recall a rumor that this tavern is famous for something, though the something escapes you. Still, going by the worn old stage in the corner, it must be the music they come for, you find a seat and settle in for what promises to be a fine night.

template: reputation + arrival sentence + slots: tell-tale clue with its inference (single slot)

the clue slot reveals what the tavern is known for

  • Seeing in is no easy thing, what with the narrow slits of leaded glass, but the murmur of secrets traded close from inside spills out into the lane all the same.

template: window sentence + slots: difficulty + window obstruction + sound or smell leaking out

the window slot hides the room while the leak-out slot sets its mood

Naming notes

The output reads as an approach and entrance: how the tavern looks from outside, what you smell and hear, who greets you, and how busy it is inside. The crowd sentence sets the clientele (road-worn traders, a guild's worth of craftsmen) which gives you a ready social hook for the scene. Use it as read-aloud when a party walks into an inn, or as prose. The crowd sentence stands alone if you only need to know who is drinking there.

Questions about tavern names

Does this generate tavern names or descriptions?
Descriptions. Each pull walks you up to and into a tavern, the building, the welcome, the bartender and the crowd, rather than producing a name.
How long is a tavern description?
Several sentences from the exterior through the entrance to the crowd inside. The crowd sentence works alone when you just need to know who is drinking there.
Can I use this when my players enter an inn?
Yes. Read it aloud on arrival. The crowd line names the clientele, road-worn traders, a guild's worth of craftsmen, which gives you an immediate social hook for roleplay.
